January 6, 2012 (Ottawa, ON.): The Ottawa 67’s today announced that 19-year old centre/right winger John McFarland has been acquired from the Saginaw Spirit in exchange for rookie David Perklin and a 4th round draft pick in 2014. McFarland will join the 67’s tomorrow when they play the Belleville Bulls in Belleville.
“We’ve been looking to add an experienced forward with offencive skills and McFarland certainly fits the bill,” said 67’s coach and GM Chris Byrne. “He’s already recorded 20 goals this season and sits in the top-25 in League scoring with 41 points in 36 games so we think John will be a great addition to our lineup, on right wing or at centre.”
McFarland, a 6’1” right hand shot, was a first overall OHL Priority Selection Draft pick by the Sudbury Wolves in 2008 after playing minor midget with Tyler Toffoli on the Toronto Jr. Canadians. He has recorded 181 points in 207 OHL games with the Wolves and Spirit, and he was the Florida Panthers 2’nd round NHL Entry Draft pick (33rd overall) in 2010.
David Perklin was the 67’s first round Priority Selection Draft pick last May. The 6’2” left winger is still looking for his first OHL point after 31 games in Ottawa.
