Full Moon too much for 67’s

Frontenac nets hat trick to back goalie’s strong outing
By PATRICK KENNEDY, QMI Agency
KINGSTON — Roommates ruled the roost for the Frontenacs during yesterday’s entertaining OHL victory over the 67’s at the K-Rock Centre.
Tyler Beskorowany and Nathan Moon, one accustomed to hearing mostly cheers for his play during his first year as a Frontenac, the other no stranger to both cheers and jeers in his fourth campaign in Kingston, showcased their respective talents to highlight a 5-4 overtime win.
Beskorowany, voted a star in all three Frontenac games this weekend (including top-dog status yesterday), stopped 36 shots, of which at least a dozen were of the point-blank brand. In the opening period alone, with his teammates either sleep-skating or seated in the sin bin, the 6-foot-5 goalie kept his squad in the hunt. Ottawa outshot Kingston 16-5, but begrudgingly took only a 1-0 lead into the dressing room knowing full well it could have been 5-0.
“We peppered him early, the same as we did (Saturday) in Ottawa," noted Ottawa coach Chris Byrne following yesterday’s game in front of a crowd of 2,521. “But he’s a 19-year-old goalie and he played awfully well this weekend."
Forced overtime
Indeed, with Beskorowany leading the way, Kingston (20-19-1-2) took four of a possible six points this weekend and played well in Saturday’s 5-2 loss to the East Division-leading 67’s.
Moon, a gifted centre prone to greatness and gaffes, often in the same game, tallied three goals including the winner, on a power play midway through the five-minute extra period. He also added an assist on Zach Harnden’s go-ahead marker in the third period, which stood up until Ottawa forced overtime at 19:55.
“I know I get it from the fans both ways, but this is my fourth year here and, you know, you can’t worry about that stuff," said Moon, who turned 20 last week. “You just have to focus on each game and continue to work hard."
Moon’s hat trick gave him 21 goals on the season, tops on the team with linemate Ethan Werek, who notched No. 21 yesterday.
“This was a big win especially after giving up the late goal and everything," he added. “The guys were a bit down after giving up the tying goal (by Corey Cowick with five seconds left and the Ottawa goalie on the bench for an extra attacker). But we took it in stride, regrouped and took advantage of a penalty in overtime."
Tyler Toffoli, Cody Lindsay and Thomas Nesbitt rounded out the scoring for Ottawa, which outshot Kingston 40-29 and led 3-2 after 40 minutes.
Cowick, who only returned to the 67’s lineup on Friday after having shoulder surgery in the pre-season, scored in all three games this weekend.
“He’s a big player for us," Byrne said of Cowick. “This is September for him. He’s only going to get better."
