IceDogs stay alive vs. 67's
|
By Ottawa Sun
On the ropes, the Niagara IceDogs sent a clear message to the Ottawa 67’s Thursday night in St. Catharines: They won’t roll over and die.
The IceDogs, trailing their first-round best-of-seven OHL opening-round series against the 67’s, 3-0, bounced back with a bang, scoring four unanswered second-period goals on the way to a 5-4 win.
Now, it’s back to Scotiabank Place for a 1 p.m. Sunday start and the 67’s don’t want to think about returning to St. Catharines for Game 6 Monday.
“The fourth win in a series is always the hardest one to get. We gave it a shot (Thursday night) and we’ll be better on Sunday," said 67’s coach Chris Byrne.
Corey Cowick, Anthony Nigro and Tyler Toffoli scored in the first period as the 67’s jumped to a 3-1 lead.
After the IceDogs scored four goals in the second, two of them on the power play, Marc Zanetti closed the gap to one at 12:50 of the third period, on the power play, but the 67’s couldn’t get the equalizer.
Ottawa goalie Chris Perugini allowed four goals before being yanked.
“We knew coming in that they got one early (in Game 3) and they got momentum in the first period," said Toffoli, between periods in a TV interview. “So I think we wanted to come out hard right from the start and get a 60-minute game going, and luckily we got three goals in that first period."
Problem was, the 67’s couldn’t maintain the momentum.
“They got momentum back in the second. It was the same thing we did the game before. But I thought we played well in the third," said Byrne. “I don’t think we took them lightly. They haven’t quit all year and we didn’t expect them to (Thursday night).
“It’s been tight-checking hockey, and it’s been exciting for the fans."
