67's down Majors in OT

Take 2-1 series lead, regain home-ice advantage

By ROGER LAJOIE, Special to QMI Agency

MISSISSAUGA — The 67’s beat the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors at their own game.

After shocking the usually defensive-minded Majors with a 7-2 win on Friday night in Ottawa, the 67’s took a page out of the Majors’ book with a

2-1 overtime win on Sunday that changed the complexion of their Eastern Conference second-round playoff series.

Cody Lindsay scored on the power play at 7:55 of the extra frame as Ottawa gained a 2-1 series lead and regained home-ice advantage.

The Majors allowed the fewest goals in the OHL in the regular season and goalie Chris Carrozzi had the second-best goals-against average in the league. But their usual defensive style went missing Friday.

Their loss Sunday came in the kind of tight defensive game in which they usually thrive. Instead, the 67’s prevailed, thanks to a too many men penalty that led to the power play.

“It was a well-played, playoff-style game and we managed to get the win, so that’s good," said 67’s coach Chris Byrne. “We want to win four games in this series and if we get it done quick, or if it takes all seven games, that doesn’t matter and it doesn’t matter how we win the games.

“(The Majors) are a very good team and they will be tough to beat the rest of the series."

Mississauga coach and GM Dave Cameron was philosophical after the loss.

“Our power play hasn’t been very good at all and they got a power-play goal to win the game, it’s that simple," Cameron said. “Give full credit to Ottawa, and those kinds of penalties just happen sometimes in pressure situations.

“We want to even up this series Tuesday night (in Game 4 at the Hershey Centre) and get it back to a best-of-three, but there’s no time for anybody feeling sorry for themselves."

In the first period, the 67’s Shane Prince was awarded a penalty shot after being hauled down by Blake Parlett, but Carrozzi stopped him to keep the game scoreless.

The Majors got on the board at 4:21 of the second when Casey Cizikas snapped a shot past Petr Mrazek from the slot, ending a string of five consecutive Ottawa goals dating back to the second period of Game 2. Mrazek stopped 36-of-37 shots to earn the victory.

The 67’s tied it at 9:37 when Prince shovelled a shot past Carrozzi after Jon Carnevale’s shot went off the Mississauga goalie’s glove and laid in the crease, before Prince swatted it in.

In OT, Lindsay slid a shot through traffic past Carrozzi, sending the 67’s pouring off the bench, now in the driver’s seat.
