Monahan named top rookie for March

Besides winning a gold medal with Team Ontario at the under-17 world hockey challenge in January, he has now been named the OHL’s Rookie of the Month for March.
Brampton’s Sean Monahan, of the Ontario Hockey League’s Ottawa 67’s, has been named as the OHL’s Rookie of the Month for March.
Monahan tied for the rookie lead in scoring for the month with 18 points in 12 games. He finished tied for second in the OHL with 11 goals during the month and added seven assists, with a plus-minus rating of plus-9.
Monahan began the month with back-to-back three-point games where he scored the game-winning goal and was named first star of both contests.
On March 2 he had his first career hat-trick in a 5-4 win over the Belleville Bulls. Two nights later he scored twice and added an assist in a 5-2 win over the Barrie Colts. He recorded six multi-point games including five in the final eight games of the regular season to help the 67’s capture their second consecutive East Division title.
The 16-year old finished his first OHL season ranked 10th in rookie scoring with 20 goals and 27 assists for 47 points in 65 games. Selected 16th overall by the 67’s in the 2010 Priority Selection, he is not eligible for the NHL Entry Draft until 2013.
He also won gold earlier this season as a member of Team Ontario at the 2011 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.
