67’s select Ottawa native Graeme Clarke in first round

The 67’s Add organizational depth with 14 picks in the OHL Priority Selection Draft

The Ottawa 67’s Hockey Club today drafted 14 players in the 2017 OHL Priority Selection Draft with Ottawa native Graeme Clarke selected with the team’s first-round pick, sixth overall. With their second round pick, 39th overall, the 67’s stayed local selecting Jack Quinn from the Kanata Lasers.

“It was a good day for the Ottawa 67’s,” said 67’s Head Coach and GM Jeff Brown. “Two great Ottawa kids in the first two rounds.”

Brown credits Pat Higgins and the scouting staff for the success of their draft.

“Higgy and our scouts nailed it and we feel very good about our draft and who we selected. We’ve added a lot more depth to our organization and there is going to be a lot of competition for jobs at camp this year.”

First round pick Graeme Clarke was ecstatic to be returning home to play OHL hockey for his hometown team.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling. I really wanted to come here,” said Clarke. “This is what I’ve been working for since I was a little kid. I always wanted to play in the OHL and now I get to come back to my hometown – I couldn’t have asked for more and I’m excited to get started.”

“I remember coming here and watching Monahan, Toffoli and Mrazek – the place was electric every night. It is amazing to be drafted to the team that I watched when I was younger,” Clarke added.

“He was the best pure goal scorer in the draft and a local kid that is going to score a lot of goals for the Ottawa 67’s,” Brown said of his first round pick.

In the second round, the 67’s stayed local selecting another right winger in Jack Quinn from the Kanata Lasers.

“Quinn is just scratching the surface on how good he is going to be,” said Brown. “He has an elite hockey brain. We came into the draft with a need on the right side and we feel we addressed that in the first two rounds.

The 67’s drafted another Ottawa native, Bruce Coltart, from the Smith Falls Bears in the 13th round (246th overall).

The drafting will continue for the Ottawa 67’s on Wednesday night with the OHL’s first-ever Under-18 draft. The draft will consist of five rounds and begins at 7:00 p.m.
