Following a wild win on the road against the Mississauga Steelheads Friday night, the Ottawa 67’s were involved in another crazy game on Sunday afternoon, one that they lost in a shootout by a score of 3-2 to the hands of one of the top teams in the OHL’s Western Conference, the Windsor Spitfires.  Austen Keating and Jack Quinn both scored in the final three minutes of the game, erasing a 2-0 deficit and sending things to an eventual shootout, where the Spitfires came out winners.

Spitfires’ Egor Afanasyev opened the game’s scoring about halfway through the first period by picking up a loose puck and beating Cedrick Andree with a perfect shot up top for his 25th of the season.  Despite going down 1-0 in the first twenty minutes, Ottawa was dominant regardless, out shooting their opponent 12-3 in the first.

Tyler Angle would make it 2-0 Spitfires at 10:21 of the second period, scoring the only goal of the middle frame.

The third period would be a wild one, in which the 67’s peppered Kari Piiroinen with 13 shots, and beating him twice late in the period to send it to sudden death.  Austen Keating would cut the visitors’ lead in half with 2:26 remaining on the board, giving the 67’s hope of a come back.  Jack Quinn went on to tie things up with only nine seconds left on the board, lifting the roof off The Arena inside TD Place and raising the fans to their feet with a perfect shot, tying the game with his league leading 45th of the season.

Overtime would declare no winner, so the shootout was necessary.  No one was able to score and beat either of Cedrick Andree or Kari Piiroinen, until Will Cuylle gave his team the win with the shootout’s only goal, giving the 67’s their first loss beyond regulation this season.

The Barber Poles will be right back in action on Monday afternoon for their Family Day game, which will feature the very popular Weiner Dog Race.  Not only that, but the 67’s will also be looking to get back in the win column against another powerful West opponent in the London Knights, whom they fell to early in the year and will look for redemption in front of their own fans inside The Arena at TD Place as soon as 2:00 PM.

Head Coach André Tourigny
“I thought it was one of our best performances in a long time, we played hard, we played with urgency.  Maybe at times we were trying to be a little bit fancy with the puck, in these kind of tight games maybe we need to keep it simple and just put more pucks at the net, but in terms of our commitment, our urgency, I’m really proud of our team and the way we played.  It was a good game between two good teams and it was a heck of a show.”

“That was good hockey.  To see our team play like that I was so proud, proud to see their intensity mentally and physically, their focus with and away from the puck, the was just no time and space out there, it was a tight game.  It was playoff hockey.”

F Austen Keating

“I’m really happy with the performance that we had.  It was probably one of the only games where we had 60 – 65 in this one, where we played with urgency and intensity the whole time.  It felt like a playoff game, the fans were into it, it was a lot of fun to be part of that comeback, it was kind of wild.  Now we’re just looking ahead to London, it’s an even bigger one tomorrow so we’re excited for it.”
