A busy birthday for Brian as Killer turns 87

Calling the Kilrea household is always a two-for-one deal.

Brian Kilrea, who turned 87 on Thursday, isn’t one for cell phones and he’s generally not one for answering the home phone, either.

Which is perfect, because it usually means a quick chat with his lovely wife, Judy.

Such was the case on this birthday.

“Oh, the birthday boy is just fine, did you want to talk to him?”

Yes please…you mean he’s not out partying yet?

A knowing chuckle from Judy. “Not at the moment anyway. Hold on, I’ll catch him for you.”

While he may not be out celebrating just yet, the man they call Killer has been doing plenty of talking already.

“It’s been busy,” says the legendary former 67’s coach and GM,“A few people from the past have called and everything. It’s nice.”

Killer, it should be noted, likes to be busy. With both he and Judy “healthy as a horse”, the Hockey Hall of Famer spent the day before his birthday golfing, as he continues to do a few times per week, though rarely this late in the season.

“It’s bonus time, yesterday was gorgeous,” he says of the fleeting spring-like weather.

Golf was also on the agenda for Friday, but there are more pressing matters this week.

“I should be golfing tomorrow but there’s a group of us going to have a beer to celebrate because there’s another friend of ours with the same birthday as me. So yeah, we’re going out and having a beer.”

Following a quick update on this year’s 67’s – “they’re coming along well, lots to like there” – and new head coach Dave Cameron – “I like Dave…he’s good for the kids and they’ll respond to him” – Killer has to run. He and Judy are taking their granddaughter for lunch at his regular haunt Chances R before dropping her off at the airport.

Happy birthday to the one and only Brian Kilrea.
